Lal Ded (also called Lalleshwari) was a 14th-century spiritual poet and mystic from Kashmir. She is revered in both Hindu Shaivism and Sufi traditions, which makes her one of the most important spiritual figures in Kashmiri culture.
She was born around 1320 CE in Kashmir.
After a difficult marriage, she left home and became a wandering mystic.
She expressed her spiritual insights through short poetic verses called “vakhs.”
Her teachings emphasized inner realization, unity with God, and rejection of empty rituals.
Both Hindus and Muslims in Kashmir honor her, symbolizing spiritual harmony.
Her poems are still recited in Kashmir today and influenced later saints like
Nund Rishi (Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali), the founder of the Rishi Sufi tradition.
Works about Lal Ded often portray:
Her spiritual awakening
Her renunciation of worldly life
Her mystical poetry and teachings
Her role in uniting spiritual traditions in Kashmir
